How to use ATMs: notes and dimensions

ATMs in Australia generally give only the mix of two dimensions bank notes – $20 and $50, so it is possible only withdraw a combination of these amounts. At gas stations, some ATMs also dispense $10, but again only in combinations of $20 and $50, and sometimes you can get $100 notes as well, but it is very rare. So make sure you are withdrawing a correct sum otherwise it will not be able to dispense cash.

Bank fees

If your card currency is different, the cash will be exchanged using the wholesale exchange rate, which is always better than the rate in any local currency exchange.

As for the fees for using a foreign ATM, apart from your home bank’s ones, Australian banks will also charge a foreign card holder for using their ATM. Usually, it is around $2 per transaction, unless your card issuer is a partner bank of WestPac or Citibank. In this case, you will be able to withdraw money without any commissions. So before you go abroad, contact your bank and obtain the information on transaction fees overseas.
